A lot has been said about Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass, and there’s a low more to be said about them. Their popularity has grown enormously in the two years since admirers started shouting “OLE” for “The Lonely Bull.”

It began with the teenagers, we thought. But the Brass’ debut as concert artists in San Francisco, we notices, to our delight, that it’s easier to skin and amoeba than to catalog the “Typical Tijuana Brass Fan”. The teens were there, but so were the “hippies” and the “squares”, the “little old ladies” and the screen starlets…

If there is one word that would describe Duke Ellington it would be “elegant”.

The name Ellington stand right at the top of the music world as a man who has been revered for more years than he would care to remember.

From his earlier days when his theme was East St Louis Toodle-OO, up to his present day band when he is playing fewer dates, but making them more meaningful, his band has probably had the least tour over of any big band in the history of big bands.

101 Strings LP Collection

The lush magnificence and stereo depth of 101 Strings is due to a combination of factors. First, in importance, is the concept of scoring for the strings. The necessity of using 101 string instruments is to utilize various harmonies and voicing and not weaken the dynamics or quality of any one line when playing counter lines.

This is particularly important with the violins and violas, and creates a wonderful rich channel separation for the stereo recording.

Secondly the original performances have been recorded under the most exacting audio engineering standards with specially designed microphones with characteristics to compensate for any possible distortion from the tremendous bass frequency response in the cello and string bass.

A true classic for the Benny Goodman Collector. Goldmine Records prices this 5 album collection from $150 to $600 depending on condition. Ours is in Very Good condition, the $150 level.

The cover and the interior pager are yellowed slightly due to age, this was produced in 1956, but the records are in very good condition.

“Why the Benny Goodman Trio achieved the universal acceptance that it did is something you can’t put your finger on. Perhaps, though, the American people, coming out of a depressing, were as ready to accept a small group playing exceptional tasteful chamber jazz as a big band swinging at one tempo or another with a truly generated excitement. At any rate the Trio did happen, producing some of the most memorable, lovely jazz ever carved into grooves of a record or the waves of a memory”.
